A Sky-High Saga: The History of New York’s Tallest Building

In 2013, a new World Trade Center was completed in New York. Its height, including the antenna, reached 546 meters (1,792 feet), and without it, 417 meters (1,368 feet). The new trade center became the tallest building in New York. But that only lasted until 2015. At that time, a new high-rise appeared in New York—the residential building 432 Park Avenue. Its height from the ground to the roof was 425.5 meters (1,396 feet). After this, the designers disputed the claim that 432 Park Avenue was the tallest building in New York for a long time and asked to consider the antenna in the height of the new trade center building. The Construction of the New World Trade Center

The One World Trade Center was built in the 21st century near the Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the horrific terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

The idea of building a new trade center appeared shortly after the attack. The idea of reconstructing the Twin Towers was even considered. But this place soon became one of the most visited in New York by both tourists and local residents. Therefore, the government created a memorial with the names of the people who died in the terrorist attack at this location.

It was decided to build a new trade center near the Twin Towers memorial. From 2002 to 2004, many construction projects were considered. Very many projects were rejected due to the huge cost and doubts about the safety of the building. In the end, they settled on the project of the brilliant architect Daniel Libeskind.

After the project was chosen, construction began in 2004. A solemn cornerstone laying ceremony was even held. But, despite this, construction was frozen for two years. The reason for the stop in construction was again fears about the safety of the building, as well as financial problems.

Construction lasted almost 10 years. In the end, the highest point of the trade center was installed in 2013. The height of the building was 546 meters (1,792 feet). As of 2013, this building became not only the tallest in New York but also took fourth place in height among all the tallest buildings in the world.

Architectural Features of the New Trade Center in New York

During the construction of the building, many of the original ideas of the talented architect Daniel Libeskind were excluded from the project. The final result of the construction of the new trade center was clearly expressed in simple symmetry. And the building’s spire was very reminiscent of other famous New York structures: the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. Visually, the architecture of the trade center also slightly resembles its predecessors—the Twin Towers. The new trade center is similar not only in appearance to its predecessors, but its area is also identical to the area of the destroyed Twin Towers.

In addition, the trade center is the first skyscraper whose construction was based on building information modeling.

The building has a cubic shape up to the 20th floor. All floors above it are smoothly slanted. Thanks to this geometry, the building forms eight tall isosceles triangles. In the middle of the trade center building, an octagon is clearly visible, followed by an expansion with a square glass parapet.
